Emily.

Hey guys – A little bit about me… I’m Emily and I am a second semester Senior at Thomas Jefferson University studying Fashion Merchandising and Management! I currently work at Free People, a UBRN company that invoked some of our favorite images, those of femininity, courage, and spirit working as a stylist and trend setter.

When it Comes to My Personal Style…

Free-Spirit meets comfort

Since I attend a university that is very competitive when it comes to your fashion sense and what you like to wear, my style has changed tremendously over the past four years. A couple words to describe my recent fashion style would be comfortable but very free-spirited with mostly neutral colors. I know you are thinking: “How are neutral colors categorized as Free-Spirited”. When I go out I want people to see that I am very put together and confident when I wear my clothing. Since I am not into very bright and colorful clothing, I tend to layer gold necklaces and fun fancy earrings with every outfit. This gives me the ‘oomf’ I am always looking for and makes me so confident when I walk into a room. When it comes to who inspires me, I would say Free People mostly takes up that position in my life. Just taking daily glimpses of their website really reels me in and motivates me to want to show off my style in the absolute best way possible. Their clothing gives off a very free-spirited vibe or even a risk taker who is not afraid to go outside of her comfort zone when she feels like it.

“Style is much more interesting than fashion” – Marc Jacobs

When I typically go into a brick and mortar store I tend to gravitate towards the denim wall and graphic tees. I am big into music so when I see a neutral colored shirt with a bright and bold logo of Led Zepplins Electric Magic festival, I cave instantly. When it comes to denim I stick to light to medium washed jeans, usually all distressed in their own way but I do casually wear black denim for a night out in the town. I usually pair my outfits with some Vans or Dr. Martens depending on how I feel that day.

it’s all about the Sparkle! The best Grammy’s Fashion

Bebe Rexha rocked a custom black and clear crystal incrusted long sleeve turtleneck top underneath a sleek oversized suit from designer Christian Cowan. This classy “boss babe” fit is by far my favorite outfit I have seen on the Red Carpet in a long time. I obsessed over this look the second I saw her on the Red Carpet. What caught my attention the most about her look was the sheer crystal long sleeve top that added a little sparkle and fun with her simple black suit.

My second favorite look was Alicia Key’s silver metal mesh gown. She was first seen in a silver Atelier Versace metal mesh gown as she kicked off the 62nd Annual Grammys. What caught my attention the most about her outfit was the asymmetric one-shoulder number that draped across right shoulder. She paired it with silver Christian Louboutin’s and Diamond studded earrings.

Jacquline Webb: Senior Fashion Student at Thomas Jefferson University

As I got to interview Jacquline Webb in our Fashion Journalism class on Tuesday night at 6:30pm, I chose to ask her some questions about what her personal style is and what her favorite piece was that she was wearing from that day. Starting off, Jackie is currently a 22 year old student at Thomas Jefferson University, studying Fashion Merchandising and Management. As I was approaching the interview questions, I first asked what her opinion was of her own personal style. Jackie believes that she has so many different styles, but it all depends on where the day was taking her. “I would say pretty edgy sometimes” she says about her daily looks “but I can be different depending on if I go out to the bars or not.” Jackie likes to rock a crop top and jeans during a night out with her friends on the weekends “but to class I always wear leggings.” I then proceeded to ask Jackie what we favorite article of clothing was that she was currently wearing. “My Filas for sure” Jackie says with totally enthusiasm “they are super comfy but trendy at the same time which I love.” She then proceeded to tell me that she would never wear them to the gym, but “I can wear them with athleisure, or I can wear them with a cool edgy outfit, they are so versatile!” Towards the end of my interview with Jackie, my last question to her was where she found inspiration for all her idea choices. “I feel like I go onto Pinterest” she said without even thinking “but before I go out to the town with my friends “I go onto my friend Kasie’s Instagram and check her feed grab inspiration from her cool daily looks.” Jackie was a blast to interview and I am excited to got to know so much about her and her fashion sense!

Trend spotting at the 2020 Oscars Award Show

Most of these celebrities came into this awards show using fashion to deliver a message without even saying a word. The trend that caught my attention the most was the sustainable style statements that played out the most throughout the night. These men and women re wore or recycled old red-carpet gowns and suits in effort to be more eco-friendly showing the world it is ok to wear the same thing more than once. Saoirse Ronan, an Irish actor, told E! during her interview that the black part of her gown was repurposed material from a pervious dress that she had worn to the BAFTA Awards last week. She finished her sustainable look with a tight up do, statement earrings and a Gucci bee hair-clip. Elizabeth Banks is another example of an actress who took the sustainable route for the 2020 Oscars. She showed up in a red Badglet Mischka gown that she had previously worn from the 2004 Vanity Fair Oscars Party. She told the world that the reason she chose to wear this dress for the second time was to bring global awareness to the importance of sustainability in fashion and consumerism as it relates to climate change, production & consumption, ocean pollution and more. Another trend that caught my attention was pink; lots and lots of pink! Actresses like Brie Larson, Idina Menzel and Regina King dressed in all shades of pink as the walked the Red Carpet into the awards show on Sunday night.

February 11, 2020

Brandon is a reporter at The Philadelphia Inquire focusing on the arts and culture scene in Philadelphia’s marginalized communities. He moved to Philly “to work with the Inquire to focus more on Balivty” (a community of the most exceptional multi-cultural creators and influencers in the world), “like what exhibits are at the museums or any cool and hip, i’m the go to person.”

I got the wonderful opportunity to meet Brandon during one of my Tuesday night Fashion Journalism classes. He talked about what he did for a living and how to talk and express your point of view as you write a column or blog post. It is so important to be able to voice your opinion when it comes to point of view writing. Starting off strong and ending strong is what keeps the reader engaged and focused throughout a piece. You want your audience to feel a connection towards your writing because it will keep them intrigued and bring them back to your page in the future.

New York Fashion Week: The Blonds

The Blonds hit New York Fashion Week 2020 with a Celestial glamour vibe as they hit the catwalk. Their Spring collection “ETHEREALNESS” was born out of the desire to make their clients feel strong, seductive, and confident. The Blonds designers David Blonde and Phillipe Blonde wanted to show their skills to honor their Latin roots through costume wear and fashion. The sequin surgical masks, sparkling get-ups and embellished pant suits with a glowing cross in the background gives the viewer a futuristic take on Religion. They are known for their craftsmanship and use of diverse materials with hardware such as spikes and chains.

This collection gives the world a look into mesh wire and lots and lots of sparkle. I was really into this collection. I’ve never heard of The Blonds before I saw their show on a Snapchat subscription and I instantly became obsessed. I am deeply in love with the way they drape their clothing over their models and the radiation their new fashion pieces gave to the audience. Their over the top glam caught my attention right as the first model walked out in a blazing sequin jumper and oversized coat to start their show.

As I was watching the models do their thing, I noticed right away the different textures they used to create their collection. Feathers, chains, snakeskin and crystals stood out the most to me through the lit-up ambiance of the giant cross in the background. This collection is not for your average person, but for the woman or man who is trying to jump out of their comfort zone who is trying to seek attention of the people around them. The Blonds showed me that there is no such thing as basic when it comes to their new collection, and it is ok to get a little feisty sometimes.

New York Fashion Week: Puppets and Puppets

Puppets and Puppets New York Fashion Week show was overall oddly shocking as I watched the models walk down the runway. If you are into weird, and when I say weird I mean really weird, this designer is for you! The models for this collection strutted up and down the runway in eccentric, costume like jumpsuits and dresses that caught the crowds attention right away.

Designers Carly Mark and Ayla Argentina created their NYFW 2020 collection out of characters and illustrations that French cartoonist and graphic novel illustrator Jean Giraud had been working on. When it comes to beauty and make-up, Puppets and Puppets don’t hold back. Their bold blush and lipstick made the models faces pop with color but not taking anything away from the bright green silk jumpsuits.

The overall show was a total hit. It was weird and different but in the best way possible. The fashion industry needs more weirdness! It made me think these people are so serious about fashion, but are not serious about fashion. This show was super up-beat and kept my eyes glued to the television as their models walked the runway in their new 2020 collection.

New York Fashion Week: marc Jacobs Collection

On the last day of the New York collections, Marc Jacobs presented his newest collection that blew everyone’s mind. He put so much history and scale into his pieces as each model walked down the catwalk along with some dancers. Miley Cyrus, the singer and former punk Disney star, modeled Jacobs all black outfit and zebra oversized jacket and long black gloves as she strutted her stuff on the night of February 13th

This collection in my option was heavily focused on 60s fashion. A lot was happening at once; a lot of different people, colors, and outfits grabbed your attention right as the first model walked the runway. Although the vibe was fun, there were plenty of sophisticated Jackie Kennedy-esque skirt suits. Gigi Hadid debuted one in white, and one even came in leather, as a brief nod to 2020s biggest trends yet. Bella Hadid, Gigi’s younger sister also made an appearance on the catwalk as well.

I really enjoyed Marc Jacobs new collection. I enjoyed the overall show with more than 80 models dressed in cashmere car coats and day dresses, oversized trousers and crew neck tops; some with built in bra tops. I didn’t necessarily love the tops with cone bras built in as I could not see myself wearing it. Then, giving us a whole different vibe, another set of models walked the runway in silver and emerald green dresses and evening gowns with different trims and three-dimensional looks. What I loved the most about the Marc Jacobs collection was the 50 dancers running back and forth the stage as the models walked through the middle of them. The dancers were dressed in pinks and pastels, lab coats and heels, bras and oversized pants and more. It gave so much positive energy and an eccentric look to Jacobs and his collection.
